Inside the city walls, almost every shopping street is historic. The Shambles, Stonegate, Petergate and Fossgate are lined with timber-framed and Georgian buildings, many of them listed. The City of York Council expects shopfronts in the centre to be traditional, with modest signs and security kept behind the glass.
Micklegate and Fossgate have independent shops, bars and restaurants, while the Coppergate area includes larger modern units.
Acomb and the suburbs outside the walls have ordinary local parades where modern aluminium fronts are perfectly acceptable.
Narrow streets and pedestrian zones mean deliveries need careful timing, often early in the morning, which we plan into the programme.
